In the past decade, over 300 women and girls have been killed or have disappeared in a town right next to the border of Mexico and the United States, in a Mexican town called Juarez. Many of the victims were raped, mutilated, and tortured.
Therefore, on February 14th, 2004 over 7,000 women and men from all over the world joined in a V-Day march on Juarez to honour the missing and murdered women, their families and the grassroots groups that are working on the ground to help them.
That year, over $175,000 was raised for local groups working in Juarez with the families of the murdered women, and those organizations that provided direct services. The march also gained worldwide media coverage from newspapers and news teams all over the world.
